Paull Blakeman

Seán Fitzgerald is an Irish writer and illustrator who lives in the mountains of the Gaeltacht region of the North West of Ireland. His previous work includes two highly illustrated books on Irish myths and folklore, “The Last Battle of Moytura” and “Lugh na Bua” both of which received recognition and praise. He has also worked closely with secondary school students in Co. Donegal to document local folklore and mythology in two illustrated books, “Fádo” and “Féirín Feasa.” Seáns dedication to preserving and sharing Irish traditions has been featured on Irish television and in various publications.

Fitzgerald started artistic life in the late 1980s as a radical fanzine publisher in County Cork before turning to ancestral skills in 1993 with Meitheal Mara (Community of the Sea) in order to facilitate these practices for inner city communities’ well-being and cultural reconnection. This cultural regeneration work led to supporting vulnerable people who were living on the street with a homeless magazine and non-profit advocacy work with Friends of the Earth. Over the course of more than a decade, he also began teaching Celtic illustration, organic gardening and foraging for young teens on a community run farm in the North West of Ireland.

Having practiced ritual traditions since the eighties as a teenager, he went on to give talks on Irish Folk Magic, where “From Shadows to Sunrise” represents the culmination of a lifelong passion and expertise. The book is not only a labour of love but also cultural work in reclaiming tradition from what has been lost due to simplification and colonised interpretations.
